I understand what you mean. I was pulled out of public school my freshman year of high school. It can be very hard to concentrate with all the just completely immoral things going on. There are a lot of programs being released for online public school education. That is that you have a teacher for each subject and tuition is little or nothing but you do it at home. The schools will usually supply you with a computer with internet access and all the text books needed for your classes. Research the internet for online high schools in your area. I attend Insight school of Wisconsin. There are many insight schools around the country. Try for more information. Good luck.
Where do you live? Each state has it’s own support groups, so start there. Perhaps you can talk to your mom about needing a change, and not just home schooling. There are also other types of schools, and perhaps looking at them all together you can both come to a better solution. If she is afraid of home schooling she may need time to see that as a good choice for you. Also if you can own your own learning and show her you want to mostly teach yourself, maybe she will feel better about it.
If she needs more convincing you could start looking up articles on home school success stories, but if her resistance is emotional she will just need time.
Or perhaps there is a different path for you.
You are strong, and perhaps are where you are for a reason. Maybe you have something to offer the people around you even if it has nothing for you. Sometimes what we gain is not what we think we want to gain. Grow where you are planted, and pray about where God really wants you. Remember Daniel, Joseph, Jonah, and all the saints before you who did not feel safe and who were in a not-so-perfect situation. You are not alone.
Go to and look at all of the wonderful information.
You will need to prove to her that you are motivated and well prepared.
Even if you cannot convince her to home-school you it will be a good idea to supplement your school-work by home-schooling yourself.
Check into buying a good Saxon Math book at your current level and do one lesson at home every day.
Write a full page essay. If I were you I would choose the topic of home-school and why it is a fine alternative to your current situation. Ask your mom to check it and show you where to make corrections…. teehee.
Read from the best of literature, historical autobiographies, scientists, etc. Read for at least 2 hours every day.
Find a support group for home-schoolers and make friends with some other students. Introduce them to your mother — and let her meet their parents.
Take her to a community home-school meeting.
Now is the time of year when conferences, conventions and curriculum sales start popping up. Find out when they will be in your area and take your mom.
Be respectful to her about this in every way. Be kind and helpful. You might even suggest the possibility of having more time to help her with tasks at home. Offer to take on extra chores and work to show her that you mean business!
The Robinson Curriculum is very inexpensvie — — and it works very well. It works best when the student is diligent, honest and willing to do the work. Studying becomes a pleasure and not a chore.
I am pulling my son out of high school next year for the same
reason. He will be going to IQ Academy in Wisconsin through
the waukesha school system. You get a free laptop to use
and all the books you need.
hi! I am homeschooled. I understand how you feel. It was like that where I used to live. It all depends where you live. I would just start looking or something. I live in Ohio. If you live there I could help alot more though.
I hoped I helped. :]
” finding out what’s wrong”
I don’t know why you want to be homed schooled but being perfect is not a option in life !! YOU, live in the world hiding and running away does NOT help you !! There are things that you learn at school and being around people that you don’t learn being at home ____social skills is one of those things. I don’t care how smart you are you won’t last any where if you don’t have social skills. How are you going to have a good job and not be able to go to it ?__Because you have fears about what others are doing, or are going to do. You’re listening to much to other people’s issue you shouldn’t make their issues yours. Stop leting yourself hear things!!!!
Focus on your own life and not no one elses.
Your board of education can tell you where to get in touch with a home school program and also look online in your state , If you were in a gifted and talent program at your school that’s great but it doesn’t have to be the end of your academic life you can still challenge yourself by get books from the library to study or buy some challenging books. Create something interesting for yourself, boredom is a part of everyday life even if you are smart !!
Also, you might want to check with a behavorist your fear might not be in your control but a mental health behavorist can help you figure out why you’re having so much fear or depression.
Good luck and I hope you feel alot better.
I agree. Im exactly like you and Im so scared of public school I went there for one year and that was enough for me.
The only cost for homeschooling is you need to buy the books you use. That can be eliminated if you use online books. That is a good place to start.
Find more out about homeschooling programs in your area and maybe you can join a local science, math, or english class.
Good Luck
Home schooling doesn’t have to cost more than regular school. Look into alternitive education. In Hesperia, CA there is a school called Alternative Education Center that is basicly home schooling where you meet 2 times a week and they provide books and everything. They even have extra classes in reading and math on other days if a student needs help. So look into your city and the ones around you. You should be able to find one.
Just because your home schooled doesn’t mean you won’t have friends. Join in clubs your interested in. Local art galleries even have classes on painting (Michels has them too) or even horse riding. Volunteering is another big one along with sports (martial arts, dance, soccer, ect.) If you like animals go to and find a local shealter that you can volunteer at, they are always looking for people. They can even teach you how to train animals. This will show your mom that you won’t be isolated from the rest of the world.
Another big plus is home schooling lets you get ahead and you can finish high school early (just to let you know you still get to go to prom night and senoir night). I think you have to be at least 16 but you could also take college classes at a community college that will act both as high school credit and college credit. This will give you a HUGE head start on college.
I hope this helps. Try to talk to your mom about how you feel about this. Tell her that you just don’t FEEL safe any more. Tell her what has happened that made you feel this way.
I would sit down with your mom and tell her exactly what you said to us! Include the list of reasons why you think it would be good for you. Just have an open conversation with her about the idea, leaving it as something to think about if she’s not willing to say yes immediately.
As for inexpensive, if you mean an online program, some are free, depending on where you live. Other than that, you don’t necessarily need a program. Figure out what you need to study and see how much you can get from the library for it and what you might need to buy. You might also consider locating homeschooling support groups in your area–they may have more suggestions or know of second-hand stores or even have libraries you can borrow from.
I admire that you are mature enough to know you do not want to be in that kind of environment!
I was homeschooled, and I loved my experience. There are many ways to homeschool, a lot of which are fairly inexpensive.
The most inexpensive way to homeschool is to let the public school provide all your curiculum. Because your family pays taxes, you are entitled access to all public school books, including the teacher’s books.
Some states have online charter schools, which are public schools that allow students to work from home. Some even provide a computer, printer, fax machine, etc., for convenience, and it’s all free. My cousin is schooled that way here in PA.
Also, here is a website that provides a list of the major curriculum providers for homeschoolers:
Hope that helps!
See if your public library has a copy of the “Teenage Liberation Handbook” by Grace Llewellyn,.
It should have lots of great info for you.
You need to explain to her about your feeling be honest.. THere are alot of programs out there that are not really expensive.. Like Connection Academy and Virtual charter school. Check around on the web there may be more in your state.. These places are free . They even send you a computer with printer and all the books you need.
What would be your Mom’s hesitation with you homeschooling? Is she working and you would be unsupervised? Is she worried she can’t tutor you in your subjects? Is she worried you can’t get a high school diploma or meet college requirements? There are ways to do all these things.
Find out her concerns, and offer her solutions that address her concerns. Research the different homeschool programs and suggest options. If the problem is cost, maybe you could work part time to help pay for your curriculum.
Best wishes. Sorry your school sucks.
Do your research. Go to your mom with all the details about what homeschooling can entail, including laws.
For legal information, see here:
Homeschooling is a great way for exceptional students to excel. Need some examples? There’s a great list of well-known people who were homeschooled here:
The whole socialization issue is, really, not an issue. See any of these articles:
Finally, regarding cost, if you want, you can homeschool completely for free! At the very least, you can do it cheaply. Here are some good resources:
Hope this helps. Prayers and good wishes!
I know exactly what you’re talking about. I delt with mostly the same things at my old school. There was alcohol, drugs and sex it was bad. I just couldn’t be in a place where those kinds of things happened and were considered acceptable.
You should talk to your Mom and tell her how you feel and have at least a rough plan set up to show her you’ve thought it out.
Good Luck and God Bless
Well it’s a known facted that homeschoolers can learn faster and pick up on things beter, because your doing one-one learning. and also the average age of homeschoolers going into collage is 16. Your mom probly wont even have to be their. Ive been homeschooled for a long time, and we tend to leanr stuff mostly on our own by reading books and watching tv ‘n stuff. I would gladly recomend it to anyone… and you can keep in touch with friends on week ends and on myspace or yahoo.
I agree with everything you said and more. My best friend and I were just talking today about home schooling our kids. I am pregnant with my first child now. Can you imagine how bad its going to be when she is old enough to go. I will be homeschooling my child and I don’t care if anyone in our family rejects the idea. Its my baby girl and I don’t want her to go through what you are going through now. I admire your courage and strength and God rewards the faithful. Timothy 4:12 says.. Don’t let anyone look down on your because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, and in faith & purity. You are doing the right thing sweetie. Convince them with this paragraph that you wrote on yahoo questions. I don’t see why they would not agree to do this for you. Good luck, I pray Gods best for you:)
Tell your mother that you do not want the government to raise you. Then tell her, the school only teaches for about 3-4 hours per day. Ask her if she can afford 3-4 hours of her time for your education. After that, explain to your mother that learning the topics of primary education are generally done with homework anyway. Explain that she does not have to re-invent school. There are many groups online with resources. Get a library card and view the books there.
